How to design an accent wall on a budget.

I love a good accent wall. I’ve found that creativity and imagination can be endless, and choosing just one wall of the many throughout your home, allows the task to be manageable. Whether basket weaving is your jam, a stone wall to add depth, or a simple geometric painting is more your style, there are options.

First set your vibe. Whether it be nature or contemporary. Black and white or colorful. Definitive or abstract. Figure out the aesthetic and feel you desire for your space.

Second choose your budget. If under $100 then get your painting skills up to par and go to town. Use tape or stencils to help bring your vision to life. A simple flower stencil can be overlapped, combined with many colors or only halfway painted to form many different looks on one canvas. However, if paint isn’t your thing and you’ve got a couple or few hundred to spare then wood designs, baskets, and other lower costs materials are available allowing you to expand your options even further beyond your skillset. Perhaps even hiring a muralist to intertwine your visions together. If under a full renovation, then stone, brick and the more labor intensive materials are an option. White wash the brick. Paint the stone. Mix materials. The options are as endless as your imagination.

KEEP IN MIND: When choosing a material it’s important to remember the fastening method for adding your materials to your walls as well. Not only will the fasteners (i.e. nails, push pins, etc.) cost themselves but they will also need to be discreet, covered up, or incorporated into your design.

Third test first. You’ve got the vibe set. Some – if not all – materials chosen. Now it’s time to for a smaller scale test. Vision is great, but e sure to implement your idea on a smaller scale before execution. Whether on a sheet of paper, a canvas, or just laying the materials out together before securing them, know that’s it’s always best to test first.

Fourth execution! You’ve set the vibe, kept the budget, tested the look and now all that’s left is executing and enjoying your accent wall.
